FLATTENING

Because Disston’s expertise lies in the manufacture of flat, thin, heat treated and ground metal products, flatness is a reoccurring problem that we have been forced to solve utilizing a variety of techniques.

Many of our satisfied customers have received products flattened by one, (or a combination), of the following flattening processes:

MECHANICAL TECHNIQUES OF FLATTENING

  • Smithing – hand hammering products by journeymen hammer smiths in the thicknesses up to .625” (depending upon the material and hardness).
  • Mechanically assisted flattening utilizing hand controlled straightening presses, hydraulic presses or press breaks.
  • Roller Leveling – utilizing Herr-Voss roller levelers for small parts (1 1/2” to 12” diameter) up to 1/8” thick.
  • Lapping for thin and very small parts (up to 6” diameter x .040” thick).
  • Precision grinding on machines with specifically designed cooling systems adapted to minimize distortion operated by craftsmen trained to maximize flatness in sizes up to 84” in diameter and 84” x 96” rectangles.

THERMAL FLATTENING
Thermal flattening performed at Disston Precision consists of placing the product under compression in a controlled thermal environment utilizing a temperature range up to 1100º F to relieve product stresses.

DIE COMPRESSION FLATTENING
Utilizing this technique, the product to be flattened is placed under compression in a die and the die containing the product is placed in a controlled thermal environment and heated and cooled appropriately.

PRESS COMPRESSION FLATTENING
This technique involves placing the product to be flattened in stress relieving furnaces containing presses which place the product under compression during the stress relieving cycle.  Disston’s press compression furnaces have capability to 1100º F and a size range up to 85” x 85” or 70” x 100”.

THERMO/MECHANICAL FLATTENING
As the name implies, Disston Precision often utilizes a combination of the thermal and mechanical processes to achieve the desired flatness.

Please contact Disston by phone (215) 338-1200 fax (215) 338-7060 or by email to see if one or a combination of our flattening processes can resolve your flatness problems.
